A Summer of Spellfire

A circle of adventurers unleashing fire, frost, psionic light, and summoned magic across a ruined battlefield

The summer of 2024 did not arrive quietly. It arrived as a fireball that finally behaved like a fireball.

Battle magic received a broad rules pass. Fireball became a true area effect with damage aligned more closely to its source material. Scorching Ray, Lesser Missile Storm, Missile Storm, Flame Arrow, healing against undead, harm magic against undead, concealment, charm, Stoneskin, human potential, and multiple psionic powers were corrected or rebuilt.

More control over the chaos

A new preference could restrict area effects to creatures already fighting the caster, reducing accidental escalation. Mass Identify joined the spellbook. Empower, Extend, Still, and Silent Spell arrived alongside automatic epic versions of Quicken, Still, and Silent Spell. Items gained a general way to cast limited-use spells, and the abilities command learned to display magic granted by equipped objects.

Eidolons could finally cast spells granted by Basic Magic, Minor Magic, Major Magic, and Web evolutions. Their melee damage credited Summoner experience correctly, their attack display scaled with size, and their darkness behavior stopped preventing them from following orders. Psionicist NPCs gained their own combat intelligence.

Quests that can talk back

The quest dialogue system opened a more expressive route through authored stories. Builders gained expanded buildwalk behavior, while one-use keys could extract themselves after fulfilling their purpose. The world could now reveal information in sequence instead of relying entirely on static descriptions and kill counters.

Activated spell items, redescription, safer restringing, downgrade for lowering powerful gear to a usable tier, better auto-preparation across multiple casting classes, improved attacks breakdowns, and broader language support rounded out the season.

Most of this work was not one dramatic invention. It was the long craft of making every spectacular thing—spell, companion, item, and quest—behave as spectacularly as its description promised.
